What are cohousing projects?

Striking a balance between communal and independent living is the first requirement for a project. As a general rule, every family or party has their own living space, but the group designates certain areas and facilities to be used communally. The underlying framework for a cohousing project is a democratic decision-making structure.

The underlying principle for a community project is that it

  • is self-ruled and
  • has a democratic decision-making body.

Many groups choose to have further overarching themes and emphases, such as:
  • Multigenerationalism
All people, from infant to senior citizen, are welcome; there is strength in this diversity.
  • Ecological building
Taking responsibility not only for the neighborhood but also for the environment and for following generations. The result: lower building and maintenance costs as well as a healthier living environment.

Under the key word "Living 50+," you can find numerous approaches and basic concepts tailoring to the special interests of the older generation. Besides multigenerational living, there are project proposals such as:

  • Cohousing for senior citizens
  • Self-organized integration of ambulance services and daily support for those who can no longer support themselves
